Civic Engagement

In several of my classes, we have done work to provide for our community. During my junior year, In my Abnormal Psychology class, we provided presentations to the community which helped people have a better understanding of mental illnesses and the proper way to treat them.

This semester, I am enrolled in the class titled Application Software. During this class, we have provided classes for the community to help people gain computing literacy. A lot of older people have attended who are not familiar with computers whatsoever. In this day in age, it is very important to have computing literacy because so many jobs require it. Email has become such a great use of communication for those working within a company.

I believe this is linkied to our learning because we are able to realize how fortunate we are to have already acquired these skills so early in life. It also has opened up my mind to the lifestyles of different people. It was easy for me to assume that everyone knew how to operate a computer. It allowed me to learn more about the community around me and how I can help the greater good.

Helping the elderly gain computing literacy brings a smile to their faces and our own.
