Helping Others

Civic engagement:

Being a part of a civic engagement course, I have helped many people in the community. My applications software class has people from the community come to our room and we help them with whatever they need. Sometimes they ask for help with making a website, printing out invitations or even just buying a new pair of glasses through an online website. They are mostly older people who don’t really know how to work a computer or the applications it has.

I think the community’s set of skills and content knowledge are linked to the student’s classroom learning because we are a big part of the community. We help a lot of community members and whatever we teach them, they go teach other people. So if we teach them nothing or something wrong than they don't have anything to share with anyone. The community of Seguin is very close so what you tell one person will quickly move throughout the community. It is important that we learn a lot of useful information in class so that the community can use it in real life.

We are closing the gap on the digital divide by teaching older people how to use computers better so that they can go and teach their friends and even their children or grandchildren.
